17th September 2018

Firstly a big thank you to all those who were able to attend our first year two reading event. We hope you found it useful and please feel free to come and ask us questions or if you have any concerns. It really was lovely to see the children enjoying reading in school with all of you- we really appreciate your support. As part of your home learning this week we would like to challenge you and your child(ren) to read as many things as possible which aren't books! This could be recorded in your home learning book if you want to. We would love to give out team points to those children who can share what they have read and where!
As promised we are also sending home this week some top tips to support your child's reading at home. We hope you find this useful.

This week in maths we have continued to look at place value with two digit numbers. We have continued to used tens and ones and also introduced arrow cards.

There are some great ICT games the childen can play to support their understanding of place value-

In English we have continued to look and read pirate stories. We have designed our own pirates and thought about suitable settings. This week the children have also written independently in their purple writing book. They were all very excited about this and got to write the opening of their Pirate story on the first page!

Next Wednesday the library van will be in school. Please remember to send in library cards. If you do not have one speak to a member of the year 2 team and we can provide you with a form to fill it .

Don't forget that on Monday we have our trip to the Time and Tide museum in Great Yarmouth for  Pirates day out! Please remember to send children with a packed lunch and drink (unless you have ordered a school packed lunch). Children are welcome to dress up as Pirate or to come in their school uniform. Children need to be at school for normal time and will be back in school ready for the end of day.

We have started Early Morning Work this week. This is a simple independent activity which the children complete whilst we take the register. It will be linked to the maths or English that we have been learning in class.

As you know all children are part of a team (Snowdon, Ben Nevis or Scarfell Pike). Children can gain team points for a range of things including making good choices.  As a school we would like to have team captains for each team. The year 2 children will be given the opportunity to be a captain for their team but first of all they will need to apply for the position. We would like you to speak to your child and help them to prepare for this if it is something they would like to do. We will then give them the chance to speak to their team and each team will vote for one team captain.
