This week in science we have continued to look at materials. We have talked about whether materials are suitable or unsuitable - for example would trousers made of paper be suitable? Then we used our creativity to make instruments out of recyclable materials. We then thought about the suitability of these. Are they strong? Do they make a nice sound? As part of your home learning you could design or create at item of clothing out of materials other than fabrics. What makes them suitable or unsuitable? This could be recorded in your home learning book.

In maths we have continued to look at division but this week we are focusing on division by grouping. (See the example below) We would love for the children to continue to practice this at home with some sweets or their toys. You are welcome to send up photos of their work or to record anything in their home learning book.

In English this week we are focusing on editing work. We have read a fact file about Mrs Ellis where she made lots of mistakes! We read it through lots of times to check for...

• capital letters at the beginning of every sentence
• capital letters for people names and places
• full stops
• spellings of tricky words
• phonetically plausible words (e.g. for the word home- hoam is phonetically plausible, hom is not)
• words which could be contractions (e.g. I am -> I'm)

We will be writing our own fact files this week and then using our editing skills (we like to do this in red pen!) to make our work even better. We will also be learning about apostrophes for possession.

In maths this week we have moved on to looking at division through sharing. Children have been learning to recognise the division symbol and how to share into equal groups. We also did this outside by sharing bulbs equally into pots. You could have a go at this at home by sharing toys or sweets. If we have 10 sweets in total and share them between 2 of us- how many do we each get? If we have 20 toy cars and share them between 4 children- how many will they get each? 

In science this week we have bee looking at and comparing everyday materials. We carried out an experiment to compare the bounciness of balls made out of different materials. We also went around the school and classroom on a materials hunt thinking about what things are made from, is this natural or man-made and why it is made from that material? As part of your home learning you could go around the rooms and look at different types of materials and list what they are used for. For example you might find glass in the kitchen in the windows and for drinking glasses. Then think about how these materials can be used outside of the home as well.

In English this week we have continued looking at facts about castles. We have looked at the different features on non-fiction books including headings, subheadings, photographs and pictures and captions. We have created our own contents page and front cover and will also be creating our own mini non-fiction piece of writing about castles.

Our new topic for this term is 'Off With Their Heads' and is all about castles! This week in English we have been learning lots of facts about castles and next week we will be doing some non-fiction writing about the various features of castles. We have also been learning how to spell some trick words- can you remember the mnemonic for castle? (Castles Are So Tall Like Elephants)We have also recapped using commas in a list. As part of your home learning you could visit the library to find some non-fiction books about castles. Can you discover any new facts? These can be written down in your Home Learning Books.

We hope you are able to join us for one of our internet safety sessions. The children have been learning about staying safe online all year and this week have been designing posters to share some important messages.
